So You Think You Can Dance, Season Five

A Guide to the Dancers

Jun 12, 2009 Derek Siegel

Even after the always-grueling Vegas Week and their initial auditions, many of the faces in the Top 20 are foreign to viewers. Hopefully, this will help.

So You Think You Can Dance takes viewers on a dazzling search for America's favorite dancer. It covers all genres from Contemporary to Broadway, from Bollywood to Ballroom, and from Lyrical Jazz to Hip Hop.

The contestants vary in age, race, and training. But they have one thing in common: they want viewers to pick up their phones so that they can become America's Favorite Dancer.

Evan Kasprzak

Evan is 21-years-old and lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He's a strong Jazz and Broadway dancer that just fell short of making Season Four of So You Think You Can Dance. This year he auditioned with his older brother, Ryan. Ryan did not make the show this year, but will most certainly be in the audience cheering his younger brother on.

Asuka Kondoh

This Latin Ballroom dancer auditioned in Los Angeles with her partner Ricky Sun. She is a 25-year-old from Irvine, California and is full to the brim with the kind of attitude and personality that makes a dancer such a joy to watch.

Kupono Aweau

Kupono is a dancer that stands out from the rest, in many ways. His dedication to dance is astounding, but many remember more clearly the critique from his audition. His distracting hair and attire and his feminine movements were under attack. He's ready to undergo some major changes to become America's Favorite Dancer. Kupono is from the island state, Hawaii.

Caitlin Kinney

She's a gymnast turned Contemporary Dancer and her strength is apparent in her dancing. Caitlin is 21-years-old and from Annapolis, Maryland. Her younger sister, Megan, made it straight through to Vegas, but didn't advance to the Top 20. Caitlin is a fighter, having gone through hip reconstruction and still dancing her heart out.

Max Kapitannikov

Latin Ballroom dancer Max Kapitannikov was born in Moscow, Russia, but now resides in Brooklyn, New York. He's proven to be a versitle dancer, adept at Hip Hop as well as Ballroom. 26-year-old Max will certainly make his mark in this competition.

Randi Evans

Randi is a passionate Jazz dancer from Springville, Utah. Her never-ending wardrobe of unitards has sparked some joking from judge and choreographer Mia Michaels, and her married status is rare in So You Think You Can Dance. But it is her eye-catching dancing that has put her into the Top 20.

Jason Glover

He started his dancing career out with Tap and Hip Hop, but now prefers Contemporary. This broad dancing background will only help 21-year-old Jason as he progresses through the competition. Like several other dancers in the Top 20, Jason is a Californian. And like all of the dancers, he will do whatever he can to make it to the end of So You Think You Can Dance.

Jeanine Mason

This 18-year-old dancer from Pinecrest, Florida is a Contemporary dancer. What might put Jeanine above the other dancers who share this popular style is her background in Jazz, Ballet, and Hip Hop. She's not the most well-known dancer in the Top 20, and hopes to change that once the competition gets under way.

Ade Obayomi

Ade, a Contemporary dancer, is not a new face to So You Think You Can Dance. During the auditions for Season 4, he got cut during the Ballroom round. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Ade expressd his excitement for the competition. He hopes that So You Think You Can Dance will help him grow as a dancer and open doors for him in the professional world of dance.

Ashley Valerio

In her own interview with the Los Angeles Times, 22-year-old Ashley reveals that her audition this year marked her fourth attempt to get into the Top 20. This Contemporary dancer is a dance instructor at several schools, but hopes to achieve her own dreams by dancing on So You Think You Can Dance.
